Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
New research suggests that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a major health publication points out that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying such medications must be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the way of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have come off the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural support.
